Born in Johannesburg in 1980, Jan-Henri Booyens lives and works in Cape Town. He studied at the Durban Institute of Technology and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, and has taught in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Stellenbosch. Booyens was one-third of the infamous artist collective Avant Car Guard and his work is part of numerous collections, including the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris. Solo exhibitions to date are The Matt Sparkle (Whatiftheworld Gallery, Cape Town, 2008), People Used To Dream About The Future (artSPACE Berlin, 2009), Tectonic (Whatiftheworld Gallery, Cape Town, 2010), Strange Days (blank projects, 2012), Save It Till The Morning After (blank projects, 2013), Some Kind Of Nature (blank projects, 2014) and Whiteout (blank projects, 2015).
Booyen’s collaboration with Warren Editions in 2014 resulted in a series of monotypes, ranging in scale, of which a selection were included in a group show, BANANAS, ZIGZAGS & SKULLS – OH AND MAX at Warren Editions Projects during December 2014 – February 2015.
