What is Typha capensis?
Typha capensis, the primary native species of Typha in Southern Africa, particularly in the Cape, is commonly known as Cape bulrush or southern cattail, a robust, aquatic perennial herb. It grows up to 2.5 metres tall from a fast-spreading rhizome, forming dense colonies in marshes, dams, lakes, and slow-moving water bodies. It has tall, strap-like leaves and a thick, brown, cigar-shaped flowering spike with male and female parts on the same stem.
Typha capensis is a species of cattail. The term “cattail” refers to the entire genus Typha, which includes multiple species such as Typha latifolia (broadleaf cattail), Typha angustifolia (narrowleaf cattail) and Typha capensis (Cape bulrush or southern cattail).
Other common names for Typha capensis are: Bulrush (English), Papkuil, matjiesriet, palmiet (Afrikaans), Ibhuma (Zulu, Swazi), Ingcongolo (Xhosa), Motsitla (Sotho) and Gwangwata, Mubungwe (Shona).
