Etching Workshop 3, 17, 24 June & 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 July 2017 & 5 August
The Etching Workshop is an introduction to drypoint, hard ground -, soft ground etching, step-bite aquatint, lift-ground aquatint, spit-bite aquatint and mezzotint and printing techniques.
The instructions given are the methods practiced at Warren Editions. In addition to learning the various etching techniques, you will learn how to print your etched plates and how to prepare paper for printing. Moreover, you will receive notes that cover all the aspects taught during the workshop.
Drypoint, not an etching technique per se, is the means of drawing directly onto the metal plate with a sharp needle, by doing so a distinct burr is thrown up on the metal and shows up in the impression as a soft, fuzzy line. Hard ground etching is a way of making fine crisp line-work, whereas soft ground etching produces lines that are crumbly-looking rather than wiry and aren’t even from end to end. And, tonal areas resembling pencil shading can be made and impressions from flat objects such as fabric, paper and foil can be achieved through the medium. Aquatint is a way of making tones; achieved through step-bite -, lift-ground – and spit-bite aquatint. Step-biting involves the building up of the image from highlights, to light tones, to mid-tones to shadows to darks. Lift-ground aquatint allows for an image to be created in the positive as apposed to the reverse as is common in step-biting. Spit-bite aquatint allows for fluidity and spontaneous gestures for the acid is painted directly onto the metal plate so as to allow for a soft tonal build up of the image.

ACTIVITIES for Etching Workshop
Session 1, Sat 3 June 2017
What is intaglio? On this day Zhané will demonstrate the drypoint technique and the printing of a drypoint.
Each participant will make a drypoint while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 2, Sat 17 June 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate the hard ground etching technique and the printing of a hard ground plate.
Each participant will etch a plate with hard ground while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 3, Sat 24 June 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate the soft ground ground etching technique.
Each participant will etch a plate with soft ground while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 4, Sat 1 July 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate the soft ground impression technique.
Each participant will etch a plate with soft ground impressions while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 5, Sat 8 July 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate the step-bite aquatint technique.
Each participant will etch a plate with step-bite aquatint while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 6, Sat 15 July 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate the lift-ground aquatint technique.
Each participant will etch a plate with lift-ground aquatint while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 7, Sat 22 July 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate the spit-bite aquatint technique.
Each participant will etch a plate with spit-bite aquatint while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 8, Sat 29 July 2017
On this day Zhané will demonstrate mezzotint, by using aquatint as oppose to a rocked plate, in conjunction scraping and burnishing so as to achieve highlights and a tonal range.
Each participant will etch an aquatint in preparation for a mezzotint and construct the image with the scraping and burnishing tools, while facilitated by Zhané with the plate production and printing.
Session 9, Sat 5 August 2017
Each participant is expected to etch a plate of combined techniques while facilitated by Zhané. A combination or a single technique can be employed; the success of the print will be dependent on a balance of technique and image. The printing of the plate must be executed autonomously.
