Even though he is a painter, Ruan Hoffmann (b.1971) is most commonly known for his autobiographical ceramic pieces and has worked with the ceramic medium for 18 years. A large number of his plates and bowls that he produces are made with paper-clay. He uses the surfaces of plates, bowls, tile panels and small sculptures as canvasses for his icon-like images. His art is often infused with personal concerns about identity and sexuality.
Hoffmann has attended various residencies including the Thami Mnyele Foundation for African artists in Amsterdam and being the first South African / African to be awarded a residency at the Zentrum fur Keramik in Berlin 2012/13.
His work is represented in the corporate art collections of Apple (Johannesburg), the South African National Association for the Arts (Cape Town), ZAM Africa magazine (Amsterdam), the Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium and the Spier Contemporary Art Collection (Stellenbosch), to name a few.
During 2011/12 the artist had solo exhibitions in New York, Cape Town and London.
He is currently living and working in Amsterdam.
