Georgina Gratrix

I’m going to be sad when I go back to painting” - Georgina’ Gratrix’s reaction after 3 days of making monotypes, her statement is a testimony to the impact of printmaking. Born in Mexico City, Mexico, and now living in Cape Town Gratrix attended the Michaelis School of Fine Art. She had her first solo exhibition Master Copy in September 2008, at Whatiftheworld Gallery in Cape Town

Georgina Gratrix worked at Warren Editions on her first series of monotypes during May 2008. She returned to the studio during August 2008 to do another intensive monotype making session. And, she visited the studio once again during end of January and beginning of February 2009.

The following is an extract - specifically referring to her monotypes that formed part of her September 2008 exhibition Master Copy - from the interview of Robert Sloon with Georgina on Art Heat:

“Robert: Your prints worked like paintings too. Do you see them as prints? Something separate?

Georgina: I see them as being very separate to the paintings. There are very useful boundaries within printmaking. I enjoy the layers, the flatness. Colour does very different things within a print. I was exploring colour and also, well, brushstroke. Maybe, They’re prints about painting. The heartbeats print specifically, the big gushy drippy brushstroke one.

Robert: Was it a challenge to work in such a technical medium? Especially working in such close collaboration with a master printer?

Georgina: No, not really a challenge. It was exciting having technical barriers, a framework which doesn’t exist in painting. Like painting can get thick and crusty and hectic, where as a print at the end of the day always looks neat and special somehow.”
